Pathways to Development : From Politics to Power
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-BC-ND 4.0 International License. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. The puzzle of why some countries are wealthier and more developed than others continues to confound students and practitioners of development alike.Whereas earlier grand explanations focused on issues of 'geography' or 'institutions', the second decade of the 21st century finally saw 'politics' arrive centre-stage within international development. This catalyzed a search to answer the key question: under what conditions do governments become committed to and capable of delivering development? How can these processes be conceptualized and researched? And what (if anything) can be done to 'get the politics right' for development?Pathways to Development draws on a major comparative research effort to present new answers to the question of how politics shapes development. It develops and applies a 'power domains' framework across multiple countries in the global South to uncover the political drivers of development across a wide range of policy areas, including economic growth, gender equity, health, and education.Hickey and Sen find that a country's pathway to development is shaped less by institutional type than by the nature of the politics and power relations that underpinned these institutions and which shape how they actually function in practice within different policy domains.Comparative analysis reveals two alternative pathways to developmental outcomes, each of which is specific to particular configurations of power. The first involves a dominant ruling coalition with a strong developmental vision that faces an existential threat from social forces; the second involves competitive settlements within which the short-term vision of ruling elites and the politicization of the public bureaucracy are offset by the presence of strong and coherent coalitions within particular policy domains.Hickey and Sen use these insights to generate innovative, practical suggestions for policy actors seeking to promote inclusive development that are aligned to critical differences in political context.

Pandemic Governance : Learning from COVID and Future Pathways
This book attempts to analyze the issues raised by the chronicity of the Covid pandemic and its governance. The author analyzes the information resources mobilized to combat the pandemic in industrialized countries and pays particular attention to the operational mechanisms. The analysis seeks to clarify the modalities of operation of the crisis system management, while at the same time looking at the decision-making mechanisms. The main lines of analysis retained are: the piloting and management of the crisis, the markets for ordering protective equipment and vaccine, the hospital organization and the prevention campaign, and the costs and the methods of financing. Finally, the author asks whether it might not therefore be appropriate to rethink the organization of the pandemic’s governance and if health crisis governance should be opened up more to deal with societal challenges. This organization is too complex and suffers both from a certain heaviness and from a lack of resources, which are detrimental to its proper functioning. It should first and foremost be open to people in the field whose absence weighs heavily on the organization of the response to the pandemic. It should also be open to other specialties, even if they seem far removed from public health and medicine, if they are useful to the government in guiding its actions. Prof. Post-Dr. Walter Amedzro St-Hilaire is the author of more than 20 books and around 40 scientific articles. His specialization areas include portfolio management, project management, entrepreneurship policies, corporate and technology governance, business technology, strategic management, business economics, risk management, economic infrastructures, public administration, international development, and applied economics. He has taught at various universities in Canada and the USA.He has served as Chief Resources Economist and Principal Officer of Procurement Operations for UEB United European Bank and as a Technical Advisor on Economic Strategies and Policy Development for the World Bank.He is also a project economics and financial business expert for several institutions and international organizations.

Higher Education, Place, and Career Development : Learning from Rural and Island Students
Drawing connections between the findings of a research project following young graduates from the Scottish islands of Orkney and Shetland, current international evidence, and theoretical literature, this book argues that understanding rural and island student transitions can expose the wider dynamics of place and mobility at play during student and early career experiences. Highlighting the importance of a career perspective, Rosie Alexander encourages readers to consider how career pathways develop across time and across transition points, unsettling the notion of a straightforward transition through university into the workplace. The book uncovers how student trajectories are developed through interweaving dynamics of relationships, place, and career routes and unpacks the implications for policymakers and practitioners. It contends that a much greater spatial awareness is necessary to understand and support the educational and career pathways of higher education students. This is a crucial read for higher education researchers, policymakers, and students interested in rurality as well as access to and transition from higher education.

People today strive to live as pain-free a life as possible, treating both physical pain and emotional suffering with a range of medical and alternative therapies. But in our efforts to avoid pain, are we excluding an important part of our human experience? In this sensitive and thoughtful book, psychologist Iris Paxino explores different kinds of pain and the ways in which each affects us: from the physical pain of illness and injury, through the emotional suffering caused by loss and deprivation, to the spiritual pain experienced in moments of doubt when we struggle with meaning in our lives.Paxino also discusses the history of pain, the impact of chronic pain and treatment methods including behavioural techniques and anthroposophic therapies. While pain should always be treated, Paxino argues that when we learn to accept it as an inescapable part of being human we develop resilience and inner peace as well as compassion for others. This sympathetic and enlightening book will be of interest to those who wish to explore the significance of pain in human experience and what we can learn from it.
